Thyroid Disorders

27 million Americans have some form of thyroid disease, and one woman in eight will develop a thyroid disorder during her lifetime. Up to 60% of people with thyroid disfunction don’t know it.

What are thyroid disorders?

The thyroid is a gland in the front of the neck that regulates metabolism and impacts multiple organ systems. If your body were a car, then your thyroid would be the engine. It controls many of your metabolic processes.

Because many thyroid symptoms are vague, they are often written off as symptoms of aging, depression, lack of sleep, or stress. Due to this, diagnosis can be challenging, and patients may not receive a proper thyroid diagnosis for years.

When your thyroid is underactive (hypothyroidism), things can slow down, leading to symptoms such as weight gain, fatigue, poor concentration, constipation, infertility, low libido, depression, slow heart rate, and low body temperature. Typically, when the thyroid is overactive (hyperthyroidism), your metabolism speeds up, often leading to weight loss, anxiety, insomnia, fast heartbeat, and/or loose stool.

How can Well Integrative Medicine help me?

In functional medicine, we look to understand why the thyroid may be out of balance. This often leads us to an evaluation of digestion, diet, exposure to environmental toxins, the presence of chronic infections, and stressors, which can contribute to thyroid dysfunction and lead us to feel ill. Then we can intervene with a variety of treatments and lifestyle recommendations tailored to the needs of each patient. Using this approach, we will work together with you to get you feeling good again!
