Chronic Fatigue Syndrome

There are more than one million people in the U.S. with CFS, and they are often unable to perform normally at work and home because of their long-term fatigue and problems with short-term memory. CFS is more than four times more common among women than men. Only 16 percent of those surveyed had received a diagnosis and medical treatment for their illness.

What is Chronic fatigue syndrome?

Chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS) is a complicated disorder characterized by extreme fatigue that can’t be explained by a single underlying medical condition. The fatigue may worsen with physical or mental activity, but doesn’t improve with rest.

The cause of chronic fatigue syndrome is unknown, although there are many theories — ranging from viral infections to psychological stress. Most experts believe chronic fatigue syndrome is likely triggered by a combination of factors.

How can Well Integrative Medicine help me?

There’s no single test to confirm a diagnosis of chronic fatigue syndrome. Patients may need a variety of medical tests to rule out other health problems that have similar symptoms.

Typically, conventional treatment for CFS relies on prescription drugs to manage symptoms. These include pain medications, sleep aids, and antidepressants – all with potential side effects.

Using functional medicine, we look for the reasons behind chronic fatigue symptoms for each individual. Once we identify the cause(s) for a patient’s CFS, we formulate a treatment plan and help the patient regain health and improve their quality of life.
